Vertical Stacking Bookshelves for Small Spaces

When we moved we lost our high ceilings and our handy spot above the kitchen cabinets for our books. So I knew I would need to include a place for books in our new space. The upstairs is quite small so we needed to be smart about how we added books. Over the years we have minimized our books and use the library quite a bit so we didn’t have a need for a ton of book storage. I landed on a vertical stacking shelf option though I love to consider all kinds of book shelves and have a board about it here.

We invested in the Story Bookcase which I have loved as a small space solution for many years. It’s very powder-coated metal construction is very sturdy and heavy and can be attached the wall as well for safety. I feel like I haven’t even started to figure out all the ways to style this bookcase, by colour coding books or turning all the spines around or even adding plants? Hopefully I can play around with it a bit but for now I am just happy to have that final box of books off the floor. I feel it’s a timeless piece that we can shift around the home as our needs change as well.

I wanted to share a few other options for more affordable but similar stacked bookcases. I also found some tutorials with a quick online search for DIY vertical stacking book shelves.

IKEA Lack vertical Shelf - An affordable alternative that can be full of books or creatively styled.

Umbra Conceal Shelf - I think you could install a number of these along the wall to recreate a similar look and even take up less space. I actually used these in our old apartment as nightstands for the wall bed. Each shelf held a few books and a phone.

Take a look at an empty corner of your home and for the same square footage as a small side table you could house your books and take advantage of the vertical space.
