Sideboards I Love
A sideboard in the Luis Barragán Studio in Mexico City
I love sideboards (or credenzas or closed cabinets or media consoles, whatever you prefer to call them, I prefer sideboard). I love that they sit along a wall and give it purpose. I love that they can display a few select lovely items, like a favourite vase or lamp or plant or record player. I love that they are completely enclosed with sliding or swinging doors. This means anything that is important but not necessarily aesthetic can be stored safely within.
I also think the right sideboard can really enhance a space. It can be wood and add warmth. It could be laqured and add gloss. It could be a colour and add a bit of fun. A sideboard could also be neutral and blend in. It can do soooo many things! And I argue for the millionth time that I find small spaces quickly and easily feel visually cluttered so having some enclosed storage can really help a small space function better and remain visually calming.

No one needs to know what’s in your sideboard, is it full of toddler toys? video game consoles? your home office? your knitting hobby? workout equipment? It doesn’t matter! None of their business.
So for my ode to sideboards, here are some I like.
The IKEA Stockholm has a lovely shape and oak veneer for a great price point. And a 16.5” depth is really nice for small spaces. HERE (photo courtesy of IKEA.com)
I’ve liked this sideboard for so long and I’m still not sick of it. We put it in 2 of my mom’s apartments. The 86” and then the 62”. It’s nice and low and stores alot with a lovely tambour detail. Only complaint is the sliding doors are weirdly loud, fair warning for sensitive ears. Still worth it for the space saving IMO HERE and HERE.
There are a number of sideboards I like from Sundays, The simplicity and height of this one stands out for me. I also like that you could put two together if you had a very long wall and needed lots of storage. HERE special mention to the various sizes of the EASY EDGE sideboard which is equally great HERE.
Not a traditional sideboard but I just love the shape of the Keep Stacking. You could do 6 enclosed or this pictured above, 3 open, 3 closed. Or if your room feels really small then just a low 3 enclosed to make the ceilings feel even higher. HERE
The IKEA BESTA is a classic. Feet can be added or it can be mounted on the wall. I’m curious about this new white oak finish! HERE
Etsy can be a great source for handmade or vintage furniture as well. Mid-century sideboards are particularly friendly for small spaces. This handmade cutie caught my eye HERE
(with Etsy always make sure to read reviews thoroughly).
Also with any of these suggestions, they can often be found secondhand. Sideboards, especially those made from solid wood should last for many years. I had one made for us over 11 years ago and it still looks great. At the time I wanted something 15” deep with sliding doors which was very hard to find, not today, you really have so many great small space sideboards options today.
