A New Sofa Consult with KING LIVING

Choosing a sofa is such a big decision! My friends Veronica and Henry ( who you hopefully remember from this small home tour HERE) were ready for a new one and asked for my help. Their 15 year old sofa had seen better days and their kids are a bit more grown so it seemed like the perfect time to update. I had done a previous consult with them for some lighting and art ideas, so they asked me to help with sofa selections (I was honoured to help).

The Before

We jumped on a virtual call even though we live in the same city because life is busy! We measured out options for their living space. Some priorities were:

  • comfort

  • cleanability

  • hard-wearing (can withstand, running and jumping on the sofa)

  • a bit more seating space than their current sofa

  • still room for extending their dining table for big dinner parties (Veronica is an excellent cook and baker!)

  • adding some fun and colour to their space inspired by their new pendant light

The recent pendant light they love that adds some colour and whimsy to their space

I had recently been introduced to long established Australian furniture brand King Living. I used their sofas in a few work projects and had been impressed with the craftsmanship and quality, not to mention the fun shapes and colours. After initially noticing the brand, I got on a call with them and learned about their commitment to sustainability and longevity of their furniture which is all too rare these days.

After mapping out rough sizes with V+H, we landed on the 1977 modular sofa. I love the squishy shape and low back (but not too low as to be uncomfortable, been there….). We debated between the chaise (package 3) versus the 3 seater (Sofa Chair, with a Corner Module on each side). We taped out both sizes together with masking tape on their floor and determined both would work. They decided to go with the chaise version. They thought the 3 seater might encroach on their large dining room set up when they extend their expanding table. But after the sofa arrived it was obvious that a larger sofa could also fit. The cool thing about a long established modular sofa (it has been in production since 1977!) is they could always add another module later.

Helping set up the new couch!

I’ve also seen this sofa in a small space with one of the armless modules used as a matching chair, which I think is a nice option as well. We also spent some time debating 2 arms versus one arm. The benefit of the chaise is to lay out on it and have a guest perch on the end. it also keeps the flow of the room more open without the additional arm. When we set up the chaise sofa, the family gravitated towards the arm corner. So would 2 arms have been better? I think both options are good, you can’t lose.

Henry came home and helped hang the art on the wall! A stunning Rubeena Ratcliffe.

Another deciding factor for this sofa is that the fabric covers are removable, fully washable and replaceable. This is so rare and so helpful for families (and I’m sure pets). I think the deep green (Leura Mangrove) really suits their space. We also considered the Leura Wattle (a lighter green) and Leura Ocean (a deep blue green).

We moved their beloved Rubeena Ratcliffe painting from the dining room to over the sofa. The green of the sofa really complimented the painting and added more colour to the space, something they wanted.

I feel like this sofa was such a great choice for this growing family. The colour and shape adds art and interest to their space. The sofa can grow with them and they could even change the colour (by swapping out the covers) in a few years if they need a update. I absolutely loved helping Veronica and family find the right sofa for their small home. Thanks to King Living for making this all happen! I have to say that I was most nervous revealing the new sofa to the boys who were wary of change and attached to the memories their old couch held. But within a half hour or so they were commenting how comfy and cozy it was and doing Ninja moves on it.

Later they added this fun new grid rug
