Holiday Decorating for a Small Space

A bit of seasonal greenery can go a long way in a small space. This cedar branch found on the walk to school.

One huge benefit of a small space is it does not take very much for it to feel festive for the holidays. Because most corners of the apartment are visible, a few well placed decorations can have a big impact. Most of the decorations we use each Christmas are either natural or reusable each season. A sprig of cedar or pine or a branch of berries in a vase you already own is great start. Look at what space you have to decorate… a mirror? add a garland to the top. An empty wall space? Add a wreath or a branch with some greenery. No mantle? No problem. Hang stockings on the wall or off a shelf or cabinet. Lining shelves or cabinets with garland can also go a long way. I keep some floral wire on hand and Command hooks so everything can be taken down easily in January.

Stockings hung on the kids bookshelves. Wood Bead Garland from Collage Collage.

Our advent calendar I bought second hand but I believe it’s still available from Ferm Living. I love that the pockets are small and can be filled with activities, stickers, small toys or treats.

Scent can also go a long way to make a space feel festive. And in a small space it only takes one seasonal candle or a recipe in the diffuser that includes spruce and eucalyptus. Also a pot of mulling spices simmering on the stove.

We’ve had a tiny tree in a pot before but for the past few years we have searched out Alpine Firs because they tend to be skinnier. This year we managed to find one that stretches to 7.5 feet tall but only takes up about 2 feet in diameter. Such a win in a small space! I use a drop cloth for the skirt that I store with the Christmas decorations box each year. Because we are in the pacific northwest we have our choice of trees, I know it can be harder in warmer climates. A norfolk pine can be a nice option.

Our alpine fir this year. And this corner of our living room is the only spot we can fit a tree that doesn’t need to shuffled around.

And because I know someone will question whether we decorate the tree… yes it is heavily decorated and redecorated on a daily basis by Mae ;). see below….

Happy holiday decorating in your small space!
